NCHSNew Building Location - Dr. Jeanette Nuckolls
by Danielle McCleave

Normal Community High School's new building is being finished up for its opening for the school year of. 2003. The address will be 3900 E Raab Rd, according to Dr. Jeanette Nuckolls, the first woman principal in NCHS history.

BLDD Architects, Inc. designed the school, which is 308,000 square feet and sits on 83 acres. The contractor is Diversified Buildings, Inc. The building will cost over 40 million dollars. There are 85 classrooms, an 8-lane track, two baseball and softball fields, six tennis courts, a soccer field, a football field, and three designated practice fields. The parking for faculty has 168 spaces with four designated handicapped, while the students have 520 spaces and six designated handicapped spaces. The tennis court parking lot has 112 spaces and four designated handicapped spots and the theater has 58 spaces. The faculty will park in the back of the building while the Students Park will in the front. So far the lockers are all in, the classrooms construction is completed, and the gymnasium floor has been painted and striped.

Also, there are many improvements from the transfer from the old school to the new one. Some benefits are better parking for everyone, more than one hallway that is wider and brighter. Two of the three floors of the new building will be accessible by the public. The third floor called the "Penthouse" will also be used for additional storage. The new school has a senior's only cafeteria and a regular cafeteria. The building is air conditioned while the present school is not. As well as increased technology, better science labs, a television and telephone in every class room (telephone in case of emergencies), new furniture (after April 15th), five individual basketball courts, athletic equipment, new bus lane where kids can wait inside for their buses to come, more efficient pickup points with the buses, six kitchens for the Foods Classes, a play- ground for Family and Consumer Sciences' classes, a weight room, a two deck auditorium, green room and dressing room for drama class, a storage room for costumes, and even a multipurpose room for dancing or after school wrestling practice. The enormous auditorium could be used as study halls during lunch hours. The Consumer Science class will never have to share with parking with driver's Ed again, and also has been provided a clear wall so teachers can observe the children watched there.

A new crisis plan has been developed for emergency routes in case of a storm because of the high amount of glass that makes up part of the school and a main portion of the auditorium.

Contrasting the positives of the new school, there are a few drawbacks. One person will possess the key to the school, so only one entrance to the school will be provided each day.

Dr. Nuckolls said she hopes people would appreciate and respect the new building. She also said, "The old building is still a great building, but the new school can start new traditions." About the question of whether or not people will miss the old building, she answered, "The spirit of the Ironmen will go with us, not the building."
